New CDM 2015 Regulations come into force

As of 6th April 2015, all construction projects will be subject to new Construction (Design & Management) 2015 Regulations (CDM). The CDM 2015 Regulations are the main set of regulations for managing the health, safety and welfare of construction projects. CDM 2015 applies to all building and construction work (commencing both before and after April 6th) and includes new build, demolition, refurbishment, extensions, conversions, repair and maintenance, from the beginning concept to the final completion.

Under the new CDM regulations, the key change will be the introduction of a Principal Designer (PD) to replace the CDM Coordinator (CDM-C). The role of the Principal Contractor (PC) will remain the same.

The Role of the Principal Designer

The Principal Designer is appointed by the client. Some key responsibilities of the Principal Designer include:
  • Coordinating and planning adequate Health & Safety before construction begins
  • Identifying foreseeable hazards of the project and being able to control and eliminate them
  • Making sure that designers adhere to the regulations and cooperate with others on Health & Safety matters
  • Liaising with the Principal Contractor to assist with the necessary planning, management, monitoring and co-ordination of the construction phase
  • Assisting the Client to identify, obtain and collate pre-construction information
  • Preparing the Health & Safety File

The Role of the Client

The CDM 2015 defines a client as anyone for whom a construction project is carried out. The regulations apply to both domestic and commercial clients. A client now has a responsibility to make suitable arrangements for managing a project. This includes making sure that:
  • Other duty holders are appointed
  • Sufficient time and resources are allocated
  • Relevant information is prepared and provided to other duty holders
  • The Principal Designer and Principal Contractor carry out their duties
  • Welfare facilities are provided
We have put the official route-map of information and responsibility on our website here

Zara

In the closing days of completion of a new store it's easy to overlook the beauty of the craftsmanship that has gone into the shop-fit. Our team labour hard to ensure that every corner is crisp, every accent made, so that the merchandise sings.

We had cause to visit this store recently for Zara in Central London, one of many projects we have undertaken for Inditex Group, and reflected upon its sleek lines...

Kite :: Westfield Stratford

This month marks the launch of eyewear brand KITE, which aims to offer a new optician experience by re-designing the eye-care journey for consumers. Crafted using the highest quality materials, KITE frames are handmade in Italy and feature double polished acetate frames, created in partnership with premium German lens manufacturer, ZEISS.

KITE WAS BORN OUT OF A LOVE FOR FASHION AND EYECARE, AND THE DESIRE TO CREATE A NEW BREED OF OPTICIANS THAT DELIVERS THE BEST OF BOTH.

"We couldn’t help feeling that the industry we love had lost its mojo. A trip to high street opticians left us feeling more like a number than an individual. Uninspiring, strangely similar frame designs stared out from white walls. The hard sell was overpowering and unhelpful. The experience was crying out for the personal touch of the good-old days, shaken up with a fresh twist for today.
So, we gathered together the industry’s forward thinkers, set about creating our wish-list optician experience… and KITE took off"

Visit KITE on the Ground Floor at Stratford London and experience the game-changing in-store environment for yourselves...

On Motcomb : Motcomb St, Chelsea.

ON Motcomb is the latest addition to the fashion scene on Motcomb Street. A show-stopping new boutique, it is the first London store to exclusively stock women’s eveningwear and gowns with some pieces created exclusively for the shop. Step inside the store and be dazzled by the masterpieces on display; dresses here can cost anything from £2,000 to £65,000 and beyond. Some gowns are so exquisite that they’ll never make it to the shop floor and are only shown to select clients.

Designed by interiors designer Ammar Bashir, the minimalist, all-white store has the effect of an art gallery with couture pieces curated for the fashion curious. Downstairs the changing rooms are a sight to behold – larger than the average London flat you could spend the whole day lounging in fashion land. The boutique is devoted to evening wear by Balmain, Carolina Herrera, Elie Saab, Erdem, Giamattista Couture, Valli Couture, Marchesa and Zac Posen.

There's a great review of this project on the Dezeen website -great photos and details of the shopfit and fitting areas.

Emmett Jermyn St

There seems to be a strong demand for quality in these times of Fast Fashion. We all know that lowering the cost often creates a sale, but quality lasts longer, and ultimately makes for better value.

We have recently been working with those creative designers at Campaign design on a store for Emmett Shirts on Jermyn St, which raises their game another notch. The shirt displays are beautiful and the accented illumination works very well.

All the internal shop and display  equipment have been replaced, along with all the floor finishes, the ceiling and lighting coffers, not to mention all the electrical, mechanical and life safety systems concealed within the store as part of our contract works.

We like it a lot...

Juicy Couture :: Westfield London

We have just completed the latest store for Juicy Couture in Westfield London. It's a store that turns most fashion genres on it's head, and redefines what luxury is in the 21st century. The look and feel is not dissimilar to the flagship store we also completed in Bruton Street, Mayfair in 2008, but distinctly more modern. More like Malibu we think than Mayfair, and likely to go down very well in West London.
